Interview

Smelly Feet Records: Mary Jane, take us through your life in music.

Mary Jane: My first contact with music began at a very young age. However, this was not because my family was interested in music. I became interested all on my own. It all started when i began recording tapes from radio shows broadcasting Disco music, quickly followed by “Neue Deutsche Welle”, New Wave, and Avant-Garde. This was the music life I had before I discovered techno. It was in my hometown, where a small Techno scene developed, and I took the opportunity to join and be part of it. The club I used to dance in on weekends is where I encountered Acid House. This was in the beginning of the 90’s. In 1994 I decided to move to Berlin where I currently live now and work as a DJ, and I am still addicted to high quality electronic dance music.

"I can play my music without having to worry about whether it works or not. The people get into my groove very quickly..."

SFR: How has your sound evolved since you began to DJ?

MJ: My sound has transformed through several genres. From Trip Hop, Electro, Acid House to Techno. I fell in love with the deepness and magic of Minimal Techno and the Detroit movement. I think basically my music is a mixture of all that I love… It’s always in motion, evolving and never stands still.

SFR: Records or tracks you cannot gig without. Why are they special to you?

MJ: For sure i can name two:

Laurent Garnier – 'Acid Eiffel'

G-man – 'Quo Vadis'

Both of these tracks date back to the time where I began to discover and understand Techno. They are both masterpieces and are connected to some very special memories of the ‘good old days’... Please, Listen to them loud!

SFR: We have noticed that you frequently perform at Golden Gate, Berlin. Could you tell us one of your most memorable moments from playing there?

MJ: Golden Gate is one of my favorite places to perform in Berlin. It’s such an honor for me to have been playing there for so many years. Especially in the morning hours, the atmosphere of Golden Gate is very unique, and I love to play at that time. I can play my music without having to worry about whether it works or not. The people get into my groove very quickly, so we are all free and we can have a magical journey through the sound of Mary Jane :) I have had so many epic moments at Golden Gate, all amazing, and I am very thankful for this. The most memorable moment I have had, is when the DJ mixer broke down during my set in a fully packed club, and we had to wait for almost 3 hours to get a new one. Nobody left the club and as the music started again, we partied until the walls came down.

SFR: Tell us about Japan.

MJ: It was one of my big dreams to go to Japan. One day, I was invited to play there and my dream came true. It was such a pleasure and an amazing experience. I toured 3 times in Japan with my dear Japanese DJ friends and I had the chance to see many places and immerse myself deeply into their culture. Japan is a wonderful country and I hope i can play there again this year.

SFR: Are there any other places you would like to visit, as a DJ or as a traveller? Why?

MJ: Our world is so beautiful and there are so many nice places and cultures to discover. I have seen just a few, so my travel and gig wishlist is looooong.

As I said previously, I’d love to fly to Japan again, particularly to Okinawa. I would love to see free-living parakeets in Australia, and it would be a great pleasure for me to play in the USA.

Also, the list of European countries is very long. There are so many wonderful cities and place.

SFR: If you were cartoon character, which would it be?

MJ: Hehehe. I think i’d be Marcie from Peanuts. She has nice hair, I love her big smile and I admire her discipline… Oh, and I almost forgot the most important thing! I love her because she loves Charlie :)

SFR: Mary Jane, tell us about this mix you made for us. Where did you get your inspiration?

MJ: I recorded this mix for you at home, in the daytime on the 1st of January. It was a very nice, bright, sunny winter day in Berlin. After a lively NYE, silence took over the city. I tried to catch the vibe of this special day and show the endlessness and deepness of the real Mary Jane groove. Trippy, deep, housy, a bit crazy with some twisted moments.
