Interview

Smelly Feet Records: Hey Dema. We see you are an extremely active producer. What is it that gets you into the zone, and gives you all the inspiration and energy you need to produce so many quality tracks?

Dema: I started listening to electronic music when I was 14. I followed the sounds of Giorgio Moroder, Sven Vath, Miss Kittin, Steve Bug and Timo Maas. By attending one of the most important clubs in my city, Magazzini Generali, I became fascinated by the possibility of manipulating the sounds, to create something new, something out of the ordinary.

At the beginning I worked on my PC making mashups and "home made" remixes as a joke. After some time, I decided to buy a DJ console and started to play with vinyl and CDs. 7 years ago, I started to produce my own music, a very minimal style inspired mainly by the Minus sound. In the last few years I have gone in a more techno direction and now I love to mix organic percussions and vocals into a good techno groove. In this last year I have been very focused on techno sounds with a hypnotic ambience, strong basslines and energetic patterns. I like to use strange vocals and sometimes some funky influences in order to make the tunes more particular and "danceable". I always try to give the idea of a "party" every time someone listens to my tunes.

"Every label has a different style and for me it is a different way to express myself."

SFR: What caught our attention the most about your career so far, was your release on Dubfires label - Sci Tec. Can you tell us a bit about this release and how it came about?

Dema: Some years ago I was watching a video on youtube and I had found one with Ali (Dubfire), playing my track ‘Indiana’, that I had made with my friends Paride and Axel. This was a very big surprise for me, so I contacted Ali and started to send him some of my new promos. Then 2 years ago I decided to try to work on an EP for Sci+Tec. With the advice of Ali, I found a very unique and personal sound and used it to create the EP. I have also played with Dubfire in a lot of Sci+Tec showcases in the last 2 years and I think these have been the best gigs I have ever done!

SFR: We notice also that you are very diverse with who and where you release your tracks. Why is it important to release on multiple labels?

Dema: I really like to work with DJ’s and labels that I have always followed. For example I have a good relationship with all the label owners, like Dubfire, Monika Kruse, Oliver Huntemann, Uto Karem and their labels are very important to me. Every label has a different style and for me it is a different way to express myself.

SFR: What are you doing right now, that is pushing your personal limits as a producer?

Dema: This year I have decided to change a bit of the style in my releases. I have come back to a more techno sound, focusing less on releasing many tracks, but instead, focusing on quality and more research regarding the sounds.

SFR: Is there anything you would like to see, in terms of hardware or software, that you feel will allow electronic music to be taken to the next level?

Dema: I'm not a big fan of digital DJ’s, traktor etc.. during my gigs I still CD’S, vinyl and an analog delay pedal. I'm not really looking for something new at the moment. As for  my productions, I use principally Fl Studio on my laptop and sometimes Logic on Mac. 10 year ago I started to work with Fl Studio and it has actually been the best sequencer for me. I have learned to use all the internal plugins and effects, and the results get better every day.

SFR: Dema. You’ve released on multiple labels, worked with the top producers on the planet, and performed on stages all over the world. What’s next?

Dema: My dream is to release on Drumcode and Cocoon, I'm working very hard on this. In the same time, as I said already, I'm coming back to a more techno sound with hypnotic synths and strange melodies. I have some strong upcoming releases on MBelektronics, Flash, Trapez and more... Of course, I'm always very focused on my gigs as well and I hope to continue on this good path..

"My aim is not only to express my sound, but also transmit great energy and positive vibes."

SFR: If you were a superhero, what would your special power be?

Dema: I don't know, probably something fast... something like THE FLASH!

SFR: Tell us about this mix you made for us. Where did you get your inspiration?

Dema: I think this mix perfectly reflects the sound that I like to produce and play during my gigs. My aim is not only to express my sound, but also transmit great energy and positive vibes.
